Lime Kiln

Industrial archaeology doesn't get much more atmospheric than this crumbling limestone furnace tucked into the Lancashire hillside above Greenfield. The kiln's stone arch still stands proud after more than a century, a proper monument to the region's quarrying past when lime burning was big business for local farmers and builders.

What strikes you first is the scale - these kilns were serious operations, not quaint cottage industries. The main chamber could swallow a small car, while the loading bay at the top shows how horse-drawn carts would tip their limestone loads straight into the fire below. Walking around the structure, you can still make out the flue channels and the remains of the charging platform.

History buffs will love piecing together how it all worked, though there's precious little signage to help. Families with older kids might enjoy the detective work, but toddlers will get bored quickly - it's essentially a big stone ruin in a field. The walk up from Greenfield takes about twenty minutes through typical Pennine countryside.

Pair this with a stay at one of the nearby holiday parks like Dovestone or Parkdean's Todber Valley site, both under three miles away. It makes for a decent leg-stretcher if you're touring the area's industrial heritage, though don't expect more than half an hour here unless you're a proper kiln enthusiast.
