Dean Head Hill

The walk up Dean Head Hill rewards you with proper Pennine views - moorland stretching in all directions, and on clear days you can pick out Winter Hill and the industrial sprawl beyond Bolton. It's a modest peak by Lake District standards, but that's precisely why it works so well as a half-day venture from Greenfield.

The climb itself takes roughly 90 minutes from the valley floor, following moorland paths that can turn boggy after rain. Trainers will suffice if conditions are decent, though proper hiking boots make the return leg less punishing on your knees. The summit's unremarkable - a trig point and a cairn - but the walk matters more than the destination here.

Families with capable walkers aged ten-plus will manage this without complaint. Younger kids get bored quickly on exposed moorland with no dramatic edges or dramatic drops to hold their attention. For serious hillwalkers, it's a warm-up route; for casual ramblers staying at one of the nearby parks like Dovestone Holiday Park or Whitegate Leisure, it fills an afternoon nicely.

There's nothing to pay and no facilities at the summit, so bring water and a snack. Go early morning if you can - the afternoon light turns muddy on these moors, and the moorland grouse can spook suddenly from the heather. Pair it with the Dovestone Valley itself if you've got more time; the reservoir walk is gentler and works well for families wanting variety across a park-based weekend.
