Sunken Gardens

The Sunken Gardens near Holyhead is one of those quiet corners of Anglesey that most visitors miss entirely, which is rather a shame. It's a proper nature reserve tucked into the landscape where paths wind through native woodland and coastal scrubland, dipping down into shallow valleys that give the place its name. You'll spot wildflowers depending on the season - spring brings bluebells, summer offers orchids if you're lucky. The walking's gentle and undemanding, which makes it ideal for families who don't fancy a full-day hike but want something more engaging than a car park stroll.

There's no great dramatic reveal here, no waterfall or viewpoint that'll have you gasping. What you get instead is a chance to actually see what Anglesey's natural habitats look like away from the tourist trails. Local wildlife - birds, small mammals, insects - thrives because the place is left relatively wild. A good pair of binoculars won't go amiss. Allow an hour or so to potter about without rushing, longer if you're into photography or bird spotting.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Coastal Pods or Two Peas in a Pod, it's genuinely close enough for a morning visit before heading elsewhere. Free admission helps, naturally. The reserve works well as a breather between beach days and the busier attractions scattered across Anglesey. Not thrilling, but genuinely restorative.
