About Stour Wood
This is walking territory, full stop. Expect mixed woodland with decent paths that range from easy riverside strolls to steeper bits that'll work your calves. The Stour River runs through it, so there's water throughout. Local walkers head here for a couple of hours minimum - less than that and you're barely getting started. Families with young kids can manage the flatter stretches along the river, but if your lot won't manage muddy boots and tree roots, save your energy.
What you won't find is visitor facilities. No car park to speak of, no cafes, no interpretation boards. This is woodland as it exists, not packaged for tourists. Getting to Manningtree first - it's a proper market town with decent pubs and somewhere to grab provisions - then working out approach routes from there is half the adventure.
If you're staying at one of the local holiday parks - Strangers, A Swift Escape, or Dovercourt are all within striking distance - this makes an excellent morning or afternoon break from park life. It's free, it's accessible, and it feels like proper Essex rather than somewhere manicured for visitors. Spring's lovely when the woodland floor floods with bluebells. Autumn's cracking too, with the trees turning. Summer brings midges something terrible, so time your visit accordingly.
