The town claims fame as Britain's smallest, though that's debatable - what isn't is its role in one of history's darker chapters. Matthew Hopkins, the notorious Witch-finder General, operated from here in the 1640s. Manningtree Museum on the high street tells this grim tale alongside more cheerful local history.

Stour Wood offers decent walking just outside town, while the railway station connects you effortlessly to London Liverpool Street in under an hour. That mainline connection makes this corner of Essex surprisingly accessible, yet it feels genuinely rural once you're here.

Across the county border, Suffolk villages like Stutton and Brantham dot the landscape, each marked by their distinctive village signs - a proper Suffolk tradition worth seeking out. The Stour Valley stretches away inland, all water meadows and ancient churches like St Lawrence at Bradfield.

Manifest Theatre provides cultural entertainment when the weather turns, though honestly, you'll spend most of your time outdoors in this part of the world. The Essex coast beckons just a few miles east, while staying at one of the nearby parks gives you a peaceful base for exploring both the Stour Valley and the heritage coast around Harwich.
