Stonehaven South Church

The granite kirk sitting on Stonehaven's High Street isn't one of those grand Victorian monuments you'd expect to stop traffic. If you're staying at Stonehaven Queen Elizabeth Park or Upper Crawton Park just down the road, this is an easy walking pilgrimage through the town centre. History types will appreciate the building's place in Stonehaven's development, though it won't consume hours of your time - thirty minutes covers a proper look around. The churchyard itself has some interesting local gravestones if you're into that sort of thing.

Truth is, South Church works best as part of a wider wander through Stonehaven rather than a destination in itself. Couple it with the seafront, grab a fish supper, and you've got a decent morning. It's free to visit, though opening hours can be unpredictable - worth ringing ahead or checking the door when you're passing. The real draw of staying near here is Dunnottar Castle and the coastal walks, but the church gives you a genuine sense of this being an actual community, not just a tourist trap.
