About Stone Arthur

Getting to the top of this 1,653-foot fell takes about two hours from Ambleside, following the well-trodden path that zigzags up through bracken and scree. The summit itself is fairly modest - a rocky outcrop with a small cairn - but the views across Grasmere and Rydal Water are properly spectacular on a clear day.

Walkers with reasonable fitness will find this a rewarding half-day adventure, though families with young children might struggle with the steep sections near the top. The path can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential.

From most camping spots around Great Langdale or the highly-rated Lakeside Retreat Glamping, Stone Arthur makes for an excellent morning hike before exploring Grasmere village in the afternoon. The fell sits conveniently between the popular tourist trails, so you're likely to have more space to breathe than on Helvellyn or Scafell Pike.

Timing matters here. Go early to catch the morning light on the lakes below, or late afternoon when the crowds have thinned out. The ascent is free, naturally, and you'll want to allow three to four hours for the round trip including time to enjoy the summit. Worth combining with a visit to Dove Cottage if you're staying in the area - it's only a short drive down to Grasmere.
