Stockwood Park

The lake at Stockwood Park catches you first - proper serene, with reeds fringing the water and birds cutting across at dawn. It's a working nature reserve just east of Dunstable, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which feels increasingly rare these days.

You'll spend your time here walking the network of paths that wind through meadows and past the water. The whole thing's free, which is genuinely good value. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it slowly, snapping photos of whatever waterfowl are about that day. Serious birdwatchers will recognize the potential - it's a proper staging post for migrants in spring and autumn. Families with young kids get a decent hour out of it before restlessness sets in; there's enough space for them to run around without causing havoc.

The reserve works brilliantly as a break between other activities rather than a day-long destination. If you're based at Merlin Farm Camping near Whipsnade (only four miles away), this is an easy morning jaunt before heading to the zoo. Same goes for Woodlands Caravan Site - you're looking at roughly the same distance. The paths are manageable year-round, though winter can get muddy if you've had rain.

Honestly, it's not dramatic or spectacular. But that's partly the point. It's the sort of place that reminds you why you bothered leaving the caravan in the first place.
