The place works because it doesn't take itself too seriously. The gardens are the real draw, to be honest. They're laid out as a series of period gardens spanning different eras, which means you're not just reading about how people lived - you're seeing it. Kids get genuinely engaged here, especially if you time it right in summer when things are actually flowering. There's also a working forge and traditional craftspeople dotted about, which beats another room full of pottery shards any day.

Allow a solid two to three hours if you're doing the gardens properly. The indoor museum can be done in an hour if you're moving through briskly. It's free entry, which seems almost criminal given the effort they've clearly put in.

If you're camping at Merlin Farm near Whipsnade Zoo or Woodlands Caravan Site, this makes an excellent backup plan for a rainy afternoon - or a genuinely worthwhile outing when the weather cooperates. The location means you're not backtracking miles from your pitch either. It's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick tick-box visit.
