Stepple Knoll

Standing at 398 metres, this modest summit offers surprisingly decent views across the Shropshire Hills without the crowds that plague more famous peaks. The walk up from Bishops Castle takes about 45 minutes through sheep pastures and patches of bracken - not the most exciting terrain, but perfectly pleasant on a clear day.

Families with older children will find it manageable, though the younger ones might start moaning about halfway up. The path isn't particularly well-marked, so bring an OS map if you're not confident with directions. Walkers looking for a proper challenge should probably head elsewhere - this is more of a gentle afternoon stroll than a serious hike.

What makes Stepple Knoll worth the effort is the view south towards the Clun Valley and north across to the Long Mynd. On a crisp winter day, you can see for miles. Summer visits can be a bit hazy, and the bracken gets proper tall by August.

For those staying at nearby spots like Wild Valley Glamping or Woodbatch Camping, it's a decent way to stretch your legs without driving far. Allow two hours return from Bishops Castle, including time to actually enjoy the view at the top. Free parking in the town, obviously no admission fee for the hill itself.
