Acton Bank

The walk up Acton Bank rewards you with proper views across the Shropshire Hills and into Mid Wales - the sort of landscape that makes you understand why people plant themselves in this corner of Powys. It's not a dramatic peak, but it's genuine fell walking without needing to commit to an eight-hour slog. From Bishops Castle, it's maybe two miles or so, and the ascent is steady rather than punishing.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination attraction with cafes or visitor facilities - you're coming for the ridge walk and the views, full stop. Allow a couple of hours up and back if you're moving at a reasonable pace, maybe longer if you want to stop and actually look around. The terrain underfoot can be boggy depending on weather, so proper boots aren't excessive.

Timing-wise, spring and early summer are cracking, though honestly the views are decent most of the year. Just avoid the greyest, dampest November afternoon unless you're into that sort of thing.

Stay nearby at one of the local campsites - Woodbatch is closest at just over two miles, or Foxholes if you want to be right in Bishops Castle town. The peak slots perfectly into a broader walking weekend in the area. It's the sort of place you'd tackle on the second day, when you've got your hill legs back and the weather forecast looks promising.
