Bromleysmill Pool

Getting lost on the winding lanes around Bishops Castle led me to this properly peaceful spot tucked away in the Powys countryside. Bromleysmill Pool sits quietly among rolling hills, the kind of place where the loudest sound is usually a moorhen calling from the reeds.

It's not a grand reservoir or tourist magnet - just a lovely slice of Mid Wales at its most unspoiled. The water reflects the surrounding woodland perfectly on still days, and there's something deeply calming about watching dragonflies dart across the surface. Anglers seem to know about it, though they keep fairly quiet about their catches.

Families staying at nearby spots like Foxholes Campsite or Green Caravan Park will find it makes for a gentle afternoon walk, especially with youngsters who enjoy pond dipping or simply skimming stones. The setting feels properly rural - no facilities to speak of, but that's rather the point.

Birds are the main draw here. I spotted herons on two visits, plus the usual suspects of ducks and coots. It's the sort of place that rewards patient observation rather than dramatic photo opportunities.

Allow an hour for a proper wander, though you could easily spend longer if you're in no hurry. Best combined with exploring the market town of Bishops Castle afterwards for a proper Welsh border day out.
