House on Crutches Museum

The building itself is the draw here - a timber-framed structure from the 17th century that literally leans on wooden crutches, propped up like an elderly relative needing support. It's in Bishops Castle, a proper little market town in Powys, and the house sits there looking decidedly wonky, which is rather the point. The timbers have shifted over centuries, and rather than demolish it, someone had the good sense to let it stand as living proof of medieval building techniques gone slightly wrong.

Inside you'll find objects from local life - domestic bits, farm tools, the sort of everyday archaeology that tells you more about how people actually lived than any grand manor house ever could. It's intimate rather than showy. The museum won't eat up your afternoon, but if you're walking around Bishops Castle anyway, it's worth the twenty minutes or so to have a look around. The structure itself is genuinely interesting, the kind of thing that makes you wonder how it's still standing.

Historians will appreciate the building as a lesson in adaptation and stubbornness. Kids might find it quirky for about quarter of an hour. It works best as part of a broader wander through Bishops Castle itself, which has enough pubs and character to justify a proper visit. If you're camped at Foxholes Campsite just half a mile away, or roughing it at one of the glamping spots dotted around the Shropshire Hills, this is an easy detour that costs nothing if you just look from outside, and not much more if you want to go in.
