The House on Crutches Museum

The House on Crutches Museum sits right in the heart of Bishops Castle and tells the story of this quirky Shropshire market town through the centuries.

Inside, you'll find displays covering everything from the building's own remarkable history to local archaeology and social history. The museum volunteers are properly passionate about the place and happy to share stories about the house's various incarnations over four centuries. Kids will love the wonky floors and low beams - though watch their heads on the way up the narrow stairs.

Weekend-only opening from May to October means you need to time your visit carefully, but it's well worth building into a Bishops Castle day trip. Allow about an hour to see everything properly, maybe a bit longer if the children get caught up in the hands-on bits.
