Staple Oak Fell

The walk up Staple Oak Fell doesn't take long, which is probably why so many people tackle it as a warm-up before heading deeper into the Lancashire hills. It's a proper modest peak by any standard - nothing that'll leave you gasping for breath - but that's rather the point. From Preston, you're looking at a straightforward drive inland, and within an hour or so you've parked up and started climbing.

What you get on top is surprisingly decent. Clear days reward you with views across the Ribble Valley, and the fell itself is heathery moorland rather than bleak rock. Families with kids who want to bag a hill without hours of trudging will find this spot does the job. It's also brilliant for walkers warming up legs after a drive north, or anyone who wants a genuine outdoor hit without committing their entire afternoon to it.

The actual pull up takes maybe 45 minutes to an hour depending on fitness. There's no visitor centre or facilities on the fell itself - bring a flask, bring a map, come prepared for Lancashire weather. Free to walk, naturally.

If you're staying at Brickhouse or Cross Lane - both excellent bases - Staple Oak slots nicely into a wider walking itinerary. Pair it with longer routes in the Forest of Bowland, which sits close by. It's not flashy or dramatic, but it's honest countryside and worth the short detour.
