About Preston

Rolling fells stretch endlessly across this corner of Lancashire, where sheep-dotted moorland meets ancient woodland. This is the Forest of Bowland's southern edge - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that feels properly wild despite being just a short drive from Preston's urban sprawl. Fair Snape Fell dominates the skyline at 510 metres, while gentler peaks like Parlick and Mellor Knoll offer easier climbs with equally rewarding views.

Walkers come here for the solitude. You might spend an entire afternoon on Totridge Fell without seeing another soul, save for the odd red grouse bursting from the heather. The area's network of bridleways and footpaths connects peaks like Burnslack Fell and Staple Oak Fell, creating circular routes that can fill a proper day out.

Down in the valleys, ancient woodlands like Brickcroft Wood and Ring Holes Wood provide shelter and different walking altogether. Horse Holes Wood is particularly lovely in autumn, when the beech trees turn golden against the darker backdrop of the fells.

Caves add an element of adventure - though Whitewell Pot requires proper caving experience. Most visitors stick to the surface attractions, which are spectacular enough.

Getting here is straightforward enough from Preston, about twenty minutes north via the A6. The village of Chipping makes a good base, with its traditional pubs and tearoom. Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks puts you right on the doorstep of this magnificent walking country, with Beacon Fell View Holiday Park and Dale Hey Farm both offering access to the fells. It's a world away from Lancashire's industrial reputation - this is countryside at its most dramatic.
