Bowland Country Park

The moorland plateau above Preston is a proper revelation if you venture out here expecting just another Lancashire hillside. Bowland Country Park sprawls across rolling fells with genuine walking routes that don't feel engineered to death. You'll find yourself on proper open ground - moorland grouse country, rough grass underfoot, and views that stretch across the Ribble Valley when the weather behaves.

What you're actually doing is hiking. This isn't a manicured visitor attraction with a cafe and interpretive boards. It's a working landscape where you walk marked trails through moorland and farmland, past stone walls, the occasional farm building, and genuine countryside. The terrain is varied enough to keep walkers engaged for a full afternoon, though if you've got kids under eight they might struggle with the distance.

The nearest sensible base is Preston, though honestly you're better positioned using one of the caravan parks within five miles - Clitheroe Camping about five miles north gives you access to both Bowland and the river valleys beyond. Beacon Fell View, just under five miles away, puts you within striking distance without the drive.

This works brilliantly if you're doing a Lancashire walking break and want somewhere that feels genuinely wild without needing Pennine-grade fitness. It's not dramatic - don't come expecting mountain vistas - but the space and the quiet are exactly what make it work. Allow three to four hours for a decent loop. Free to roam, no facilities to speak of, so bring water and decent shoes.
