Standing Stone

A single slab of stone rising from the Cumbrian landscape - that's all Standing Stone is, and yet it commands proper attention. Located a few miles from Penrith, this Bronze Age marker stands weathered and solitary, the sort of thing you could easily miss if you weren't looking for it, which makes finding it all the more rewarding.

What you get here is archaeology in its most honest form. No interpretation boards, no visitor centre, no queue - just a lump of rock that's been here for three thousand years and will likely outlast us all. The stone itself is roughly worked, tall enough to be impressive without being showy. Stand in front of it and you're looking at something that prehistoric people deemed worth the effort to move and position. That carries weight, even if the context is sparse.

Walkers and history types will get more from a visit than casual tourists. It's the sort of stop that makes sense if you're already out rambling in the Penrith area - not worth a dedicated trip on its own, but absolutely worth a detour if you're exploring Lowther Holiday Park or Crossfells Campsite nearby. Allow twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're the type to sit with it and think about who put it there.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though facilities are non-existent. Best visited in decent weather when you can actually see where you're walking. It's a moment of genuine ancient Britain, no frills.
