Salmond's Hill

The walk up Salmond's Hill doesn't take long, which is precisely why it's worth doing when you're based at one of the caravan parks around Penrith. You're looking at maybe 45 minutes to an hour from the base to the summit, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath on the steeper bits.

It's a proper fell walk rather than a stroll, with decent views across the Eden Valley and toward the Lake District fells. On a clear day you can see quite far, though the summit itself is fairly low-key - no trig point theatrics, just open moorland and the satisfaction of having climbed something. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the initial ascent a slog.

The best time to go is late morning when the light's good and you won't spend the whole walk squinting into glare. Bring decent boots - it can be boggy after rain, and the ground's uneven enough that trainers feel like a mistake halfway up. It's free, obviously. No facilities at the top, so carry water and whatever snacks you fancy.

If you're staying at Waterfoot or Park Foot, you're barely 20 minutes' drive from the start. It fits nicely into a half-day when you want a proper walk but nothing that demands an early start or wrecks the afternoon. Not spectacular enough to be worth a special trip, but absolutely the kind of thing that makes a caravan holiday feel active rather than just sitting about eating ice cream.
