Soulby Fell

The walk up this lesser-known fell rewards you with proper views across the Eden Valley without the crowds that plague the central Lakeland peaks. From the top, you'll see across to the Pennines on a clear day, with Cross Fell visible to the northeast. It's a steady climb rather than anything too challenging - most reasonably fit walkers will manage it in under two hours.

Families with older children will find this a good introduction to fell walking, though the youngest ones might struggle with the distance. The path can get boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Unlike some of the more popular fells around Penrith, you're unlikely to queue for summit photos here.

Timing matters more than you might think. Early morning gives you the best chance of clear views before the afternoon haze settles in. The fell sits well for anyone staying at the nearby holiday parks - Ullswater Holiday Park and Park Foot Holiday Park are both within easy driving distance, making this a cracking day out that won't eat up your entire holiday.

While it's not going to make anyone's top ten Lake District peaks, Soulby Fell offers a proper taste of Cumbrian countryside without the tourist circus. Worth the effort if you want some peace with your panoramas.
