Rumney's Plantation

Dense coniferous woodland stretches along the eastern shores of Ullswater, offering proper forest trails away from the lake's busier sections. Rumney's Plantation consists mainly of spruce and pine, with well-defined paths that wind through the canopy and emerge at occasional clearings with fell views.

Families will find the going manageable - the terrain is relatively flat compared to the surrounding fells, though it can get muddy after rain. Dog walkers particularly appreciate the shade and shelter here. The forest feels quite different from the open fell country that dominates this corner of the Lake District.

Expect to spend an hour or two exploring the main routes. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so come prepared. The plantation works well as an easy woodland walk when the weather's turned or when you fancy a break from the more strenuous lakeside hikes.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Ullswater Holiday Park or Park Foot puts you within easy walking distance. The forest sits just off the main A592 near Pooley Bridge, making it a convenient stop whether you're heading to Penrith or exploring the quieter northern end of Ullswater. It's hardly the Lake District's most spectacular corner, but sometimes a simple woodland ramble is exactly what's needed.
