Dacre Bank

Dacre Bank is a modest fell just outside Penrith that doesn't trouble the big names in the Lake District, but that's precisely why it works. The walk itself is straightforward - nothing too demanding - and the views across to the Pennines and back towards Ullswater make it a solid afternoon out. You'll see fell grass, bracken, and on a clear day, proper visibility that justifies the climb.

It's worth doing if you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Waterfoot or Beckses are practically on the doorstep, and Ullswater Holiday Park sits just a couple of miles away. The thing is, Dacre Bank doesn't demand a full day. Two to three hours up and back, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. Families with older kids will find it manageable; younger ones might get restless on the descent.

The real appeal? It's unpretentious. No gift shop, no fee, no queue of walkers. Head up from the village of Dacre itself and you've got the fell mostly to yourself, especially midweek. The views aren't spectacular in the dramatic, postcard way, but they're genuine and you've earned them.
