St Peter the Fisherman Craster

The little stone church sits quietly above Craster harbour, easy to miss if you're focused on the fish and chips queue below. St Peter the Fisherman is exactly what its name suggests - a working parish church with proper maritime credentials, built to serve the fishing community that's sustained this village for centuries.

Inside, it's genuine and unshowy. You'll find the usual Victorian fixtures and fittings, but what makes it worth a visit is the setting itself. The churchyard overlooks the working harbour where fishermen still land their catch, and on a clear day you can see right along the Northumberland coast. The light coming through the windows is lovely, especially in late afternoon.

It won't eat up your time - twenty minutes is plenty, unless you're one for sitting with a cup of coffee and reading the parish notices. Walkers heading to Dunstanburgh Castle (visible from here) often pop in. Families with young kids might find it a bit quiet, but it's free and opens onto the village where there's proper life - the harbour, ice cream shops, the smell of kippers from the smokehouse.

If you're staying at Northumberland Coast Camp just down the road, it's genuinely worth the five-minute walk for the views alone. The church isn't a destination in itself, but paired with the harbour walk and nearby Dunstanburgh, it slots perfectly into a coastal morning. Go early to avoid the day-trippers.
