Dunstanburgh Castle

The castle emerges from the clifftop like something from a medieval fever dream - all crumbling towers and weathered stone against the North Sea. Built in 1313 by Thomas of Lancaster, Dunstanburgh is one of those proper dramatic ruins that rewards the walk out to it. From Craster village, you've got a decent trek along the coast path - about 1.5 miles - which sounds like a slog but actually the views across the water make it fly by. Once you're there, the place has real presence. The gatehouse looms massive, half-ruined but somehow more impressive for it, and you can clamber around the curtain walls, peer into the old towers, and get a genuine sense of the scale.

Walkers will love the location more than casual day-trippers. Yes, it's atmospheric, but there's perhaps 45 minutes of poking about before you've seen it all. History types will appreciate the building's defensive role during the Wars of the Roses, though the layout is confusing if you haven't got context. English Heritage runs it - opening Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm - and it's worth checking their website for admission prices and facilities. The nearest camp is Northumberland Coast Camp, barely a mile away, which makes this a natural anchor point for a week exploring the Northumberland coast. Combine it with Bamburgh and Lindisfarne if you're castling your way through the region. Come when the light's low and the wind's up. That's when Dunstanburgh works best.
