Howick Hall Arboretum

The woodland walks at Howick Hall Arboretum stretch across proper mature grounds just a couple of miles south of Alnwick. You're moving through a collection of trees planted over centuries - some Victorian specimens, plenty of native woodland, and enough open spaces that it doesn't feel claustrophobic even when the place fills up. The hall itself sits beyond most of the walking routes, so this is genuinely about the trees and the shelter they provide rather than any grand country house experience.

It's ideal if you're based at Northumberland Coast Camp or one of the other sites within spitting distance and need a morning out that doesn't demand much planning. You can wander for an hour and feel like you've done something, or stick around for two or three if the weather holds and the kids aren't fractious. The terrain is mixed - some gentle tracks, some bits that'll challenge your calves depending on which routes you pick.

Historically minded visitors will find the collection itself interesting, though it's not the kind of place where you'll come away having learned masses. More valuable as a breathing space if you've spent the previous day tramping around Alnwick Castle or picking apart Dunstanburgh ruins. The nearest accommodation at Northumberland Coast Camp sits well for exploring this corner of the coast - you could string a whole week together visiting the arboretum, the castle, and the castle at Dunstanburgh without repeating yourself much. Open most days, free to enter, and worth half a morning at minimum.
