St Michael's Church, Cefnllys

The ruins of St Michael's Church sit alone on a hillside near Llandrindod Wells, looking out across the Powys landscape like something from a ghost story. What remains is mostly the shell of a medieval church - stone walls, a few arches, the ghost of what must have been a proper place of worship centuries back. You can walk right up to it and poke about among the remains, which is the whole appeal really. There's no visitor centre, no interpretive boards telling you what to think, just you and the stones.

It's ideal if you're into Welsh history or medieval architecture, and walkers will find it worth the detour from Llandrindod Wells - the approach itself is pleasant enough, though the setting feels a bit melancholy once you're there. Families might find it underwhelming unless the kids are genuinely interested in ruins; there's not much to actually do, and the novelty wears off after twenty minutes or so.

Free to visit, naturally. Allow perhaps half an hour if you're taking your time, less if you're just ticking it off. The best move is to combine this with a wider exploration of the area - the nearby Disserth Caravan & Camping Park and Fforest Fields are both solid bases for Mid Wales, and you can work St Michael's into a proper day of walking or driving around the Powys countryside. Go early or late in the day if you want moody light and fewer other visitors bumbling about.
