St Mary's Catholic Church

A solid Victorian church sitting quietly on the outskirts of Greenfield, St Mary's Catholic Church is the sort of place you'd stumble upon while walking the Lancashire moorland rather than deliberately plan a trip around. That said, if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Hidden Hills or Bay View are practically on the doorstep - it's worth the short detour.

The church itself dates to the mid-1800s, when the local Catholic community built it to serve the growing industrial population. Inside, you'll find decent stained glass and the usual period details - nothing flashy, but genuinely interesting if you care about Victorian ecclesiastical architecture. The churchyard's worth a wander too, with older graves scattered among the headstones.

This isn't a destination in itself. You won't spend more than thirty minutes here unless you're properly into church history. But it works brilliantly as a break point during a longer walk across Crook O'Lune or through Dovestone's grounds. The setting - moorland edges, stone walls, that proper North West light - makes it feel genuinely part of the landscape rather than plonked on top of it.
