St. Mary & St. Nathalan Chapel

The ruins of St. Mary & St. Nathalan Chapel sit quietly on the Aberdeenshire coastline, a short walk south of Stonehaven. What you're looking at is medieval stonework - proper old, going back centuries - with enough walls still standing to let you read the building's bones. It's not a grand affair. There's no roof, no fences, no visitor centre with a gift shop. Just the chapel itself, the sky above, and often a stiff wind off the North Sea.

Who gets the most from it? Walkers, mostly. If you're doing the coastal path between Stonehaven and beyond, this is a proper landmark to aim for - gives you a reason to pause and poke about. The walk from Stonehaven takes twenty minutes or so, and it's straightforward - the chapel's marked well enough once you know where to start. Go when the weather's decent; there's not much shelter here, and winter gales turn it from atmospheric to genuinely miserable. Worth including in a coastal walk rather than making a special trip on its own.
