You can usually get inside during daylight hours, though opening times aren't advertised anywhere sensible, so pop into the Moffat tourist office if you're serious. Entry is free. Spend twenty minutes here, maybe half an hour if you read the plaques and memorials. History buffs will appreciate the layers - Roman connections nearby, medieval foundations, the whole sweep of Scottish religious life underfoot. It's not a dramatic destination; no one books a holiday to see it. But if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites - the Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site is basically on your doorstep - or passing through town between the hills, it's worth ducking in. Pairs well with a wander around Moffat's modest high street and a stroll up the Devil's Beef Tub if you've got the energy.
