St john's Church

St John's Church sits on the edge of Carlisle, a solid stone structure that's been doing its job for centuries without much fuss. It's a proper working parish church rather than some grand cathedral - the kind of place where you'll find locals at Sunday service and the occasional visitor wandering in out of curiosity.

What you're looking at is medieval architecture with all the usual fixtures: stone walls, stained glass, a bell tower, and enough history embedded in the pews to keep anyone interested for half an hour. The churchyard's worth a wander too if you like reading old gravestones.

It won't set your heart racing if you're not particularly into ecclesiastical buildings, but it's exactly the sort of spot worth a quick stop if you're based at one of the nearby campsites around Keswick - Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club is barely half a mile away, making it convenient between exploring the lake district proper. Castlerigg Hall Caravan Park is just as close if you're doing the caravan route.

Family groups with kids aged eight upwards will get something out of it; younger children tend to get restless after ten minutes. It's free to enter (as churches generally are), and you can spend as long as you fancy without anyone bothering you. Go midweek morning if you want the place to yourself. It works best as a half-hour detour rather than a destination in its own right - think of it as local flavour rather than a main event.
