St James sits in peaceful countryside between Scarborough and the coast, its Norman foundations still visible beneath later medieval additions.

Inside, the real treasure is a series of medieval wall paintings that survived the Reformation - faded but still visible figures of saints and biblical scenes that give a rare glimpse into how these spaces looked before the whitewash. The wooden box pews date from the 1700s, each carved with family names that you'll still find on local gravestones.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the mix of architectural periods, while families often enjoy the peaceful churchyard where ancient yew trees create natural play areas. Photography is generally welcomed, though it's worth checking if any services are taking place.

The church makes a pleasant stop if you're staying at nearby Haven Primrose Valley Holiday Park or the family-friendly sites around Filey. It's an easy drive from most of the caravan parks in the area, and combines well with coastal walks or trips into Scarborough. Allow about 30 minutes unless you're particularly keen on medieval architecture - then you could easily spend an hour examining the stonework and soaking up the atmosphere.
