St. Ffraid Trearddur Bay

Ancient stones mark the spot where Christianity first took root on this stretch of Anglesey's coast. St. Ffraid (the Welsh name for St. Brigid) sits right on the edge of Trearddur Bay, with the Irish Sea lapping practically at the churchyard gate.

This weathered little church feels properly remote, despite being just minutes from Holyhead. The building itself is modest - whitewashed walls and a simple bell tower that's seen centuries of coastal storms. What makes it special is the setting and the sense of continuity. People have been worshipping on this spot since the 6th century, and you can feel that weight of history in the salt air.

Walkers on the Anglesey Coastal Path often stumble across it by accident, which seems fitting for somewhere so unassuming. The churchyard offers lovely views across the bay, particularly at sunset when the light catches the water just right. History enthusiasts will appreciate the ancient origins, though there's not a great deal of surviving medieval fabric to examine.

Families staying at nearby Silver Bay Holiday Park or the adult-only Bryn Ednyfed site will find it makes for a pleasant twenty-minute detour. The walk from Trearddur Bay village is easy enough for older children, and the coastal setting gives restless kids something to look at beyond old stones. Allow half an hour unless you're the contemplative type.
