St. David’s Church, Holmbridge

The stone church sits squat and solid on the hillside above Holmbridge, the kind of building that's clearly been keeping watch over the Holme Valley for centuries. St. David's is a proper working parish church - no fancy visitor centre, no gift shop, just a straightforward place of worship that draws you in through its heavy wooden door.

Inside, it's all flagstone floors and dark wood pews, with enough light filtering through the windows to make out the Victorian stained glass. The real appeal here is the sense of continuity - this is where locals have come to mark the big moments for generations. If you're into church architecture or local history, there's enough to spend half an hour poking around and reading the wall tablets.

It's worth a visit if you're already in the area, particularly if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Secret Valley Escapes or Whitegate, both under a mile away. Don't plan a trip solely around it, though. The village itself has genuine character - the street layout, the old mills - and the surrounding moorland is proper walking country. Combine it with a proper explore of Holmfirth itself, which sits just down the valley and has genuine appeal beyond the TV connection.

Access is free and there are no set visiting hours, though common sense applies if you're turning up outside service times. Allow twenty minutes unless you're really keen on monuments and inscriptions.
