St Andrew's Parish Church

The sandstone kirk sitting just off Moffat's High Street is one of those proper Scottish parish churches that rewards a quiet wander round. Built in 1887, it's got the sort of solid Victorian respectability you'd expect from a Dumfries & Galloway market town - red stone, decent proportions, nothing flashy but genuinely well-crafted.

Inside, there's real character. The stained glass windows catch the light nicely, and the interior has that particular smell and acoustic you get in old Scottish kirks - somehow both cold and comforting at once. It's the kind of place where you can actually feel the town's history without anyone making a fuss about it.

Unless you're a serious church architecture enthusiast, allow twenty minutes to half an hour. Walk round the exterior, step inside, look at the windows, and you've got the measure of it. It's free to visit, though opening hours aren't always obvious from the outside - your best bet is checking the website or asking at one of the local shops in Moffat itself.

Worth fitting in if you're staying at Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Howslack Farm - both are within easy walking distance. It slots naturally into a morning exploring Moffat's town centre before heading into the wider Dumfries & Galloway countryside. Not a reason to plan your whole trip around, but absolutely worth the fifteen-minute detour if you're in town.
