St. Aelhaearn’s Church

The tiny church sits alone on a hillside just outside Caernarfon, its stone walls weathered to a soft grey that seems to belong more to the landscape than to any human construction. St. Aelhaearn's is the sort of place you'd stumble upon by accident while walking, rather than plan a special trip for - though it's worth the minor detour if you're camping nearby.

Inside, it's genuinely humble. A handful of pews, ancient and worn smooth by centuries of locals, face a simple altar. The real draw is atmosphere rather than architecture. There's something about a church this small and remote that makes you actually think, rather than just glance around.

This works best for walkers exploring the Caernarfon area, or anyone who enjoys poking about old Welsh churches without the crowds you'd find at the cathedral. Families with fidgety kids might find ten minutes enough. Check locally for opening times before you visit - these rural churches can be locked on weekdays.

It's an easy fit with a stay at any of the nearby campsites: Gyrn Ddu Campsite is barely two miles away, making it a pleasant ramble before breakfast. Haven Hafan y Môr, further along at under six miles, works too if you're after a longer morning walk with something tangible at the end. Free to visit, obviously. Allow 20 minutes unless you're the contemplative sort.
