Moel Penllechog

The walk up Moel Penllechog isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you feel like you've actually done something. Starting from near Caernarfon, you're climbing proper upland terrain - not a gentle stroll through the valleys. The summit sits at just over 500 metres, which means the views across the Menai Strait and towards Snowdonia are genuinely impressive on a clear day. You can see right down to the water and across to Anglesey. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're taking it steadily, less if you're used to hill walking.

This is the sort of walk that rewards families who don't mind a proper climb and walkers looking for something with real views without needing a full day's commitment. The terrain can be boggy and the path isn't always obvious, so waterproof boots and a map are non-negotiable. Winter visits need care - exposure matters at this height. Summer and early autumn are best.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Gyrn Ddu is just over a mile away, or Aberafon if you want something slightly further - this makes a brilliant half-day objective. It's free to climb, obviously, and there's parking near the start. The whole experience has that satisfying mix of effort and reward that makes North Wales walking so addictive. You won't see crowds here, which frankly is the main appeal.
