Moelfre

Standing 589 metres above sea level, this Welsh peak offers proper mountain walking without the crushing crowds of Snowdon. The summit rewards those who make the climb with sweeping views across the Menai Strait to Anglesey and down the coast towards Bangor. It's a good honest walk that'll take most people around three hours return from the car park near Caernarfon.

Families with older children who can handle a decent uphill slog will find this well worth the effort. The path isn't technical but it's steady going, and you'll want proper walking boots rather than trainers. Weather can change quickly up here, so pack layers even on what looks like a sunny day.

This makes a cracking day out if you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Gyrn Ddu Campsite or Aberafon Camping. The mountain sits conveniently close to Caernarfon, so you could easily combine it with a castle visit or a trip into town for supplies. Unlike some of the bigger peaks in Snowdonia, you won't be fighting for parking spaces or dodging tour groups. It's proper walking country where you can still find a bit of peace.
