South Side Mount

South Side Mount sits just outside Driffield in the Yorkshire Wolds, a modest earthwork that tells you more about Bronze Age settlement patterns than it first appears. It's an Iron Age hill fort - or what's left of one - with defensive ditches and ramparts that would have been properly impressive two thousand years ago. Now it's a gentle walk across open ground where you can actually trace the archaeological layers yourself if you know what to look for.

This is squarely for the history enthusiasts and landscape walkers rather than thrill-seekers. You won't find visitor facilities or interpretation boards, which means either you come prepared with some background reading or you treat it as a contemplative spot with views across the Wolds. The walk itself takes twenty minutes from the nearest road, and the site itself rewards maybe thirty minutes of poking about, depending on how much you want to study the earthworks.

Staying at Thorpe Hall Cottages, just under a mile away, makes this properly convenient for a morning walk before breakfast or an afternoon outing. It pairs well with exploring the broader Wolds landscape - the archaeology here is part of a much larger story of Iron Age life across this part of Yorkshire.

Free to visit, obviously, being what it is. Go when the ground isn't waterlogged - the Wolds can be boggy - and bring proper footwear. It's not a destination in itself, but if you're in the area for a week at one of the nearby parks, it's absolutely worth the detour.
