Skyreholme Mill

The ruins of Skyreholme Mill sit quietly beside the beck in the Aire Valley, a short walk from Skipton. What remains is a proper snapshot of Yorkshire's industrial past - stone walls still standing, the framework of what was once a working textile mill during the 18th and 19th centuries. You can see where the water wheel would have turned, grinding away to power the machinery that kept the local economy moving.

It's not flashy. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards explaining every detail. What you get is the ruins themselves, honest and weathered, and the surrounding landscape. History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile, particularly if you're interested in the region's manufacturing heritage beyond the big mills in Bradford and Leeds. The walk to reach it is pleasant enough, following the beck through open countryside.

Bring decent boots if you've had rain - the ground can get boggy. Allow an hour or so if you're combining it with a riverside walk, less if you're just having a quick look. The free admission is a bonus, and there's no faffing about with opening hours. If you're based at nearby Breaks Fold Farm Glamping, it makes an easy half-day outing before settling in for the evening. Skipton itself is worth a proper explore - the market town has real character, and the castle is genuinely impressive. Skyreholme Mill works best as part of a broader day out rather than a destination on its own, but if you're walking the Aire Valley, you'd be daft to miss it.
