Shooters Knoll

Standing at 520 metres, this modest peak in the Long Mynd range offers proper Shropshire hill country without the crowds that swarm the higher summits. The walk up from Church Stretton takes about an hour through heather moorland and gets your heart pumping without being a proper slog. Views stretch across the Welsh borders on clear days, though it's hardly spectacular - more of a gentle reward than a jaw-dropping panorama.

Walkers looking for a decent half-day ramble will find it well worth the effort, especially if you fancy linking it with other Long Mynd tops. Families with older kids might enjoy the challenge, though little ones will definitely struggle with the boggy patches near the top. The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - just a grassy mound marked by a small cairn.

Best tackled in dry weather when the moorland paths aren't waterlogged. Spring brings lovely purple heather, while autumn offers clearer air for those border views. It's free to roam, naturally, being open access land. Perfect for stretching your legs if you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Mountain Edge Shropshire or Small Batch Camp Site, both just over a mile from the trailhead. Not worth a special journey, but a lovely addition to a Shropshire walking holiday.
