Long Wood

Walking into Long Wood feels like stepping back in time. This ancient forest sits just outside Church Stretton, and it's the sort of place where you'll find yourself alone on the path, listening to nothing but birdsong and the crunch of leaves underfoot. The woodland is genuinely old - gnarled oak and beech trees that have been here for centuries, with a dense canopy that keeps things cool even on warm days.

It's excellent for walkers who want something proper woodland rather than manicured paths. The terrain's uneven in places and there's genuine atmosphere, which means it works better for teenagers and adults than small children. A leisurely wander takes a couple of hours depending on which trails you follow, though you could easily spend longer if you're the sort who stops to look at things. Spring brings bluebells across the forest floor, and autumn is when the light does something special filtering through the canopy.

If you're staying at Greenway Touring and Glamping Park just four miles away, this is a logical morning walk before heading elsewhere. Same goes for Bow House Country Park and Wayside Camping - all within easy driving distance. The forest sits nicely between Church Stretton itself and the Long Mynd, so you can build a proper day around it rather than treating it as a one-stop destination. No visitor facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared with water and snacks. Admission is free, which helps tip the scales in its favour.
