Knolls

Three rocky outcrops rising from the Long Mynd plateau, the Knolls offer some of the finest panoramic views in Shropshire without the crowds you'll find on more famous peaks. From Church Stretton, it's a proper uphill slog across heathland and bracken, but the 360-degree views from the summit make every step worthwhile.

Walkers who enjoy a challenge will love this one - the route demands decent fitness and navigation skills since paths can be sketchy in places. On a clear day, you can see across to the Welsh mountains and down into the Severn Valley. The wind up here can be fierce, so pack layers even in summer.

Families with older children might manage it, but this isn't a gentle stroll. Allow three to four hours for the round trip from Church Stretton, longer if you want to explore all three summits properly. The terrain can be boggy after rain, making walking boots essential.

Staying at one of the nearby sites like Mountain Edge Shropshire or Small Batch Camp Site puts you within easy reach for an early morning climb when the light is best. The lack of facilities means bringing your own supplies, but that's part of the appeal - proper hill walking without the tourist infrastructure.
