About The Wern
This is where to come if you want a solid woodland walk without the crowds of the big attractions. Dog walkers love it. Families with older kids who can handle muddy terrain will get a couple of hours out of it without complaint. The paths wind through the trees, and there's enough variation to keep things interesting - you're not trudging along a single obvious route. Bring proper footwear though; it's boggy in places.
If you're camping at Mountain Edge just up the road - barely a mile away - or based at one of the other parks around Church Stretton, The Wern makes an excellent half-day detour. It won't blow your mind if you're expecting dramatic vistas, but it's genuine woodland exploring. Free access, no gates or visitor centres to worry about. Go early morning if you can; late afternoon light through the trees is lovely, but the place fills up a bit more as the day goes on.
