Reservoir Woods

The water glints between the trees long before you spot the actual reservoir. Reservoir Woods, just outside Church Stretton, is one of those proper Shropshire spaces where you can walk for hours and barely see another soul. It's a genuine nature reserve - not manicured, not branded, just woodland that happens to wrap around a working reservoir, and that's exactly what makes it worth the trip.

You can walk the perimeter, which takes a solid couple of hours depending on your pace and how often you stop to watch for birds. The path's well-trodden but sometimes muddy, especially after rain. Bring decent boots. The water itself is lovely on a clear day - it reflects the hills properly - and the woodland's mixed enough that there's always something different: bracken in summer, proper golden light in autumn. It's the kind of place where you actually hear yourself think.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's too quiet for small kids who need facilities and activities, but older children who enjoy a genuine ramble will find it absorbing. History types might appreciate that this is working industrial landscape from the Victorian era, though the reserve itself is all about wildlife now.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Small Batch or Brow Farm are closest at under three miles - this is an obvious morning or afternoon walk. Pair it with the Long Mynd hills nearby for a proper day out. There's no cafe or facilities here, so bring water and pack something to eat. It's free to access, and that's part of its charm - no ticket booths, no signage telling you where to stand.
