Haddon Hill

Standing at just over 500 metres, this modest peak offers one of the finest views across the Shropshire Hills without the lung-busting climb you'd expect from higher summits. The walk up from Church Stretton takes about 45 minutes through lovely heather moorland, and frankly, it's far more rewarding than some of the area's better-known hills.

Families with older children will manage this easily enough, though toddlers might struggle with the uneven terrain near the top. The real prize here is the 360-degree panorama - you can spot the Wrekin to the northeast and the Welsh borders stretching west. On a clear day, it's properly spectacular.

What makes Haddon Hill particularly appealing is how quiet it stays compared to the Long Mynd's busier paths. You're likely to have the summit largely to yourself, especially on weekday mornings. The ground can get boggy after rain, so decent walking boots are essential.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip, including time to appreciate the views. Pack a thermos - the summit can be surprisingly brisk even on warm days, and there's something rather satisfying about hot tea with that view spreading out below you.
