Scarborough Open Air Theatre

You're sitting on a sloping grass bank above Scarborough's South Bay, the North Sea stretching out in front of you, when the lights come up on stage. That's the Scarborough Open Air Theatre - and it's genuinely brilliant on a warm evening.

It's been running since 1932, which says something about how well the location works. The theatre sits right on the seafront with the bay as your backdrop, and even a mediocre show would be worth attending just for the setting. In reality, the programming is solid - proper touring productions, tribute acts, comedy nights, and seasonal pantomimes. You get everything from established acts to up-and-coming names.

The experience is decidedly British seaside: bring a cushion, wrap up when the sun drops, maybe sneak in a flask of tea. It genuinely enhances the show. Families with teenagers will have a proper night out here; younger kids might struggle with the seating unless you're watching something specifically aimed at them like the panto.

Timing matters. Summer shows run May through October roughly, with peak season June through August. Check their website for what's on - tickets aren't cheap but you're paying for the production quality and that location. Allow the whole evening, including dinner beforehand in town.

If you're based at Scarborough Camping and Caravanning Club or Prospect House Farm just up the road, this is a five-minute walk. Perfect way to end a seaside break without the car bother.
