Saint Martin's Field

You won't see this on most tourist maps, but Saint Martin's Field near New Romney is exactly the sort of place Kent locals slip away to when they want a proper walk without the crowds. It's a nature reserve, which means you're here for birds, wildflowers, and the kind of landscape that feels genuinely wild - marshland that actually breathes.

What you get is open ground, ditches full of reeds, and if you time it right, proper birding territory. Waders in winter, breeding birds through spring. It's not a manicured park with signage at every turn - this is working countryside. Bring binoculars if you've got them, comfortable boots without question. An hour's walk covers most of it, though you can easily stretch that to two if you're the observant type.

It suits walkers far more than families after a quick outing. Young kids might find it a bit samey - there's no playground, no café, nothing to break the rhythm of walking. But if you're into natural history, or you just want to escape the caravan park mentality for an afternoon, it's worth the detour from any of the holiday parks dotted around New Romney - Marlie or Romney Meadows are barely a mile away.

Free to access as far as I can tell, and the best time is early morning or dusk when the wildlife actually shows itself. Summer brings insects and flowers; autumn and winter are peak birding. Check conditions before you go - it gets waterlogged.
