The Romney Marsh landscape around New Romney can feel bleak at first glance - flat, windswept, with wide open skies that make you feel properly small. Fairfields Park is the nature reserve that explains why you'd bother coming out here at all. It's a working wetland that draws serious birdwatchers and anyone who wants to understand what the marsh actually is beyond the postcards.

You'll walk through wet grassland and reed beds where the light changes constantly depending on cloud cover and time of day. In winter the place heaves with wildfowl - shovelers, pintails, wigeon - if you know what you're looking for. Summer brings breeding warblers if you're early enough. The paths are straightforward, nothing technical, but wear wellies unless you've come in a dry spell.

This isn't a visitor centre with a cafe and gift shop. There's no faffing about. You come to look at birds and plants, full stop. If you're staying at one of the holiday parks nearby - Marlie, Romney Meadows, or the New Romney Caravan Park are all within spitting distance - it's a sensible morning outing before the wind picks up. Allow an hour or two depending on how keen you are with binoculars.

Worth the trip? Only if you actually care about wildlife. Kids will fidget after thirty minutes. But if you're a proper birdwatcher or just want to stand somewhere quiet and watch the marsh work, this is the real thing - no false charm, no tourists, just you and the birds.
