Rushy Hill

The walk up Rushy Hill from Rossendale isn't long, but it's steep enough to warrant proper boots and a decent pace. You're climbing through moorland that feels properly wild even though the towns press in on all sides - there's something about Lancashire hills that catches you off guard if you're expecting gentler countryside.

The summit views sweep across the Rossendale Valley with the industrial past still visible in the weaving sheds and old mill chimneys scattered below. It's not dramatic like the Pennines further east, but there's a real sense of elevation and openness once you're up there. On a clear day you can see proper distance.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's a straightforward ascent with no technical bits, so families with school-age children manage it fine, though younger kids might find the climb tedious. Allow an hour up and back down at a reasonable pace. The moorland top is exposed, so wind can be bracing even when the valley below is calm.

It works well as part of a broader walking holiday around Rossendale. Dearden Wood is only 5.5 miles away and makes a decent base if you're planning several peaks and valley walks in the area. Burrs Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, slightly further out at 6.1 miles, sits right by the river and gives you proper walking access to multiple routes. Worth timing your visit for autumn or spring - summer crowds on the valley paths, and winter moorland can be properly boggy.
