Turf Moor has been Burnley Football Club's home since 1883, and walking up to the ground still feels properly atmospheric on match days. The stadium sits right on the edge of town, brick and history all around it, with that particular electricity you get when thousands are converging on the turnstiles.

If you're a football fan staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Rossendale Holiday Cottages is only four miles away, or Higher Grange and Trawden Forest if you fancy something a bit plusher - catching a match here beats watching it in a bar. The Championship fixture list brings decent crowds and a real sense of occasion. Even on non-match days, you can usually do a ground tour if you book ahead, which gets you into the dressing rooms and tells you the club's story - promotion and relegation, survival and struggle, the lot.

It's not a massive stadium by Premier League standards, but that's partly what makes it work. You're close to the action, close enough to hear what players are actually saying. Allow a couple of hours for a tour, or three to four if you're there for a match and fancy a pre-game pint in the surrounding pubs.

Not one for non-football people, to be honest. But if you've got kids who support the club, or you're just keen on old football grounds with genuine character, it's well worth the trip from your holiday base.
